Solar wind meets the sky
Charged particles stream off the sun and slam into gases in Earth's magnetosphere. Each collision releases a photon — billions of them become the shifting curtains of the aurora. Green dominates because oxygen glows green at ~100km altitude; rarer purples and reds appear higher up.
One honest detail that builds trust with customers: cameras capture more colour than the naked eye. A faint grey-green arc to the eye photographs as a vivid green ribbon. Set that expectation and the real thing still amazes.

The lights concentrate in a ring between 65°–72°N — the Aurora Belt. Tromsø (69.6°N) and Rovaniemi (66.5°N, exactly on the Arctic Circle) both sit inside it. That's the single biggest reason our trips outperform "maybe we'll get lucky" holidays further south.
